Spanish Voices Condemn Moroccan Abuses in Western Sahara

“Spanish political parties on Wednesday condemned the Moroccan occupation’s human rights violations and the plundering of Sahrawi natural resources in Western Sahara, calling these acts a flagrant breach of international law.”

Alfonso Lucas Muñoz, Secretary General of the Communist Party of Murcia, currently visiting Sahrawi refugee camps with other political and social organisations, condemned Morocco’s serious human rights abuses in occupied Western Sahara and its treatment of political prisoners. He called for their release and reaffirmed his party’s support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, sovereignty, and control over their resources.

The Spanish United Left party also condemned the treatment of Sahrawis by Moroccan occupation forces in occupied Western Sahara, reiterating its commitment to defending Sahrawi rights, especially their right to self-determination.

Murcia MP José Luis Álvarez Castellanos, in press statements, emphasised the importance of the recently adopted parliamentary resolution condemning Morocco’s occupation of Western Sahara and rejecting any unilateral solutions that undermine Sahrawi self-determination.

Spanish journalist Alfonso Lafarga, in a recent article, called for an end to Morocco’s escalating violations of Sahrawi rights, criticising the ongoing international silence despite documentation by Sahrawi and international organisations.

He cited the 61st session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva last March, where activists presented serious complaints and testimony about systematic rights violations in occupied Western Sahara.

He also highlighted the occupation’s repressive practices—arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances, torture, mistreatment, lack of fair trial guarantees, and smear campaigns against activists, journalists, and students. He noted the absence of human rights monitoring and violations of UN resolutions by the occupation authorities.

Spanish journalist Victoria García Corera, in an article, stressed the need to resolve the Western Sahara conflict in accordance with international law. She argued the Sahrawi issue is now less about decolonisation and more about an economic model built on occupation and the plundering of Sahrawi resources.

Spanish journalist and human rights activist Alvas Vito Alvarez advocated for Sahrawi self-determination and sovereignty over their resources, condemned ongoing human rights violations, and warned that continued international silence and lack of accountability only encourage further abuses by the occupation.
