Spring of discontent blows civil servant sector in Algeria
The civil servant workers were shocked to notice that the wages increase promised by the government didn’t reflect reality on the paper due to the taxes levied on these new adjustments.
According to the head of the unions “the increases announced in the new salary toll as well as the incentives promised by the president to small employees were chopped”.
In this respect, the spokesman for the national Union of education workers, M Amraoui said “The increase they are talking about, which they consider important in a sector which employs 400000 workers was slashed between 15 to 28 percent as an income tax which creates a gulf between the announced increase and the received salary in April.
He added that these taxes varied between 8,000 to 10,000 Algerian Dinars depending on the position of each employee in the sector despite the fact that the minimal wage of an employee is limited to 12,000 Algerian Dinars.
These wages, according to M Amraoui, do not alleviate the social sufferings of the Algerian teachers, making a parallel with their Moroccan counterparts who own 38,000 Algerian Dinars for a beginner whereas the Algerian gets 22,000 Algerian Dinars; while a Moroccan teacher at high school owns 120,000 the Algerian gets 29,000 Algerian Dinars.
