Suspected Of Corruption In Algeria: Italian Energy Companies Exonerated By American Justice

.The US Department of Justice has closed its investigation into suspected corruption by Italian energy giant Eni in Algeria.

Thus, the Americans definitively closed the ENI file after having buried Saipem’s for some time.

This was reported by the Italian company in a press release published on its website, claiming that the US Department of Justice has closed its investigation on suspicion of corruption against the company in Algeria and Nigeria.

With regard to the investigations into ENI’s activities in Algeria, the same statement added that “the Milan court had previously acquitted the company and its management”.

Thus, the American courts have reportedly definitively dropped the charges against Italian companies – operating in Algeria – suspected of corruption.

It should be recalled that the US Department of Justice had closed its investigation into suspicions of corruption by Saipem in Algeria. A inquiry that have lasted two years, from 2013 to 2015.

Saipem had been sentenced by the Algiers court in February 2016 to 4 million dinars in compensation for the benefit of Algerian authorities.

On the other hand, the said court informed the Italian party a few weeks ago that the verdict was rescinded after an appeal, that a review of the case will be undertaken and that the freezing of its assets in Algeria (71 million Euros, or 100 Billion centimes (DA)) will not be lifted.
