Terrorism plan reactivated to face suicide and belt bombings in Algeria

Reshuffling that would be seen in national security forces due to be officially announced on July 22nd would include some 13 provincial security heads, sure sources told Echorouk.

  • The same sources confirmed that heads of security department in Algiers and Boumerdes (50 km east of Algiers) will be transferred. These two provinces experienced a series of suicide attacks and terrorist acts escalation that “penetrated” the capital after years of calm and stability.

  • Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika held a meeting with security officials during the first week of January. He expressed his frustration because of the security situation deterioration, particularly in the capital under security tightened security measures at the presidential palace and government institutions areas.

  • Algerian Interior Minister Noureddine Yazid Zerhouni confirmed in a press conference directly after the December 11 explosions in Algiers that security forces were well informed about the attack on the Constitutional Council. An image was found in the mobile phone of terrorist Sofiane Fassila who was responsible for the suicide bombers’ cell.

  • In a meeting with security executives in Algiers, a day after the 11 December explosions, General Director of the National Security Department Colonel Ali Tounsi announced that “security ranks will include only those who are able to face terrorism”.
