This is the background of the Moroccan “play” and the wanton provocations against Algeria
A diplomatic source has unveiled many of the shadowy points that surrounded the lame Moroccan “play” orchestrated during the proceedings of the meeting of the UN Commission on the Elimination of Colonialism (UNSCOM 24), in charge of decolonization which was held at Saint Vincent and the Grenadines from 16 to 18 May.
The diplomatic source told “Echorouk” that what had happened was proof that Moroccan diplomacy had lost its right, as the Algerian diplomat Mr. Sofiane Mimouni was brutally attacked by an element of the Moroccan delegation during the proceedings of the UN’s 24th Committee on Decolonization in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
“The vile aggression took place under the eyes of the representatives of the 24 member states and the rest of the participants, after Morocco failed to involve two (elected) members of the administration of the city of Laâyoune, who attended the meeting as representatives of the people of Western Sahara,” he said.
According to the source, this desperate attempt was blatantly aimed at undermining the credibility of the Polisario Front as the legitimate and sole representative of the Saharawi people in accordance with the resolutions and regulations of the United Nations.
The source pointed out that the decolonization committee had vigorously addressed these maneuvers, but the Moroccan delegation, which had participated with at least 15 individuals, was clearly at odds with the other participating delegations, owing to the use by the Moroccan delegates of defamation, threats and intimidation towards the conference chairman and other delegations in attendance.
The Algerian delegation was thus the victim of the Moroccan delegation’s low-down practices, which resulted in the physical aggression against one of its members by browbeating the person of Ambassador Mr. Sofiane Mimouni, who participated in this meeting as part of the Algerian delegation.
“The strangest scene is that the offender, had left the conference hall for a short period of time before returning there but as a victim, he then thrown himself to the ground, falsely claiming he had been injured in an act of aggression perpetrated by an Algerian diplomat.
He added that the Moroccan delegation involved in this “theatrical play” had vainly sought to cover up the serious incident in the corridors of the United Nations.
This insane behavior by one member of the Moroccan delegation, according to the same diplomatic source, is due to the telling impact of the hot debate that took place on the eve of the incident in the framework of the proceedings of the Committee of 24 between the heads of the Algerian and Moroccan delegations.
The Ambassador of Morocco, as it was, tried to provoke the Algerian delegation by holding Algeria responsible for “blocking the settlement process of the Western Sahara conflict” in a bid to cover up the long-running colonial and repressive practices of the Rabat regime against the Saharoui people.
In response to these slanders, the head of the Algerian delegation explained to the participating delegations through documented evidence, the somber reality of the colonial situation prevailing in Western Sahara, marked by the continuation of the illegal Moroccan occupation of the territory and the absence of prospects for a just settlement of the issue under international legitimacy.
The head of the Algerian delegation also focused on the deteriorating and abhorrent human rights situation in Western Sahara because of the brutal Moroccan military and administration practices, and castigated the wanton lies of the Moroccan propaganda, which tries to give a pseudo bright picture of human rights in this occupied territory.
The head of the Algerian delegation also referred to the continuous looting of the wealth of the Saharoui people and the systematic closure of the Western Sahara borders to human rights activists, journalists, parliamentary delegations and non-governmental organizations
It also revealed Morocco’s numerous obstacles to the United Nations and the MINURSO mission to prevent it from carrying out the task entrusted to it by the Security Council and the Secretary-General’s Envoy.
The head of the Algerian delegation, Ambassador Mohamed Hanache, lodged a complaint with the President of the Conference asking him to take the necessary measures to hold Morocco accountable for the consequences of its representative’s blameworthy behavior and to stave off the recurrence of such vile acts of aggression in the future.
