The study which was published US-based Economic Institute says the deterioration of the purchasing power in Algerian has been serious durint the year 2007. The inflation rate reached a peak of 12 percent while varying from 8 to 11 percent most of the year. The figures are much more alarming than the oned published by the Algerian official figures (The National Statistics Office,) who has similarly announced the year 2007 as the most expensive one for Algerian in years.

According to the American Kazai Research Centre which published a survey on the economic situation in Algeria for international institutions including the World Bank made of Algeria one of the North African countries in which inflation rates increased considerably compared to 2006.

The National Statistics Office published in January 2007 showed an increase in inflation but said it has reached 3.5 %, a slight increase from previous years despite the dramatic rise in prices.

The Governor of the Bank of Algeria, for his part, said last Tuesday, before the directors of national public banks, that prices rose last year by only 4.6 percent, while the information available on the market all say prices increased dramatically on international markets even. The question is: how can prices rise elsewhere and affect people in the richest countries of the world but do not increase much and do not have any serious impact on Algerians.
