US Study Advises Trump To Deal With Algeria As An Important Partner

Washington Institute for Near East Policy prepared a study that calls upon the new US president, Donald Trump, to pay greater attention to the area of north and west Africa, and avoid focus on the Middle East, as it considered Algeria among the main pillars of peace in the region and Europe.

Same study said that the United States goes wrong by ignoring that this region of the Middle East (North Africa), which does not receive the same attention that is given to the Middle East.

It was prepared by Robert Satloff and Sara Feuer, two experts in the affairs of the Arab region and issues of political Islam, as they recommended that the new US administration needs more rapprochement with Algeria as an irreplaceable partner in the region, despite that it warns from what it called “radical nationalism” of Algeria.

It is entitled: “Strengthening stability in North-West Africa … proposals for US policy in Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco”, and it advises Trump’ administration to show openness to Algeria “as a partner to share interests rather than considering it only beneficiary of the US aid”, which characterized Algeria from its eastern and western neighbors in the study of the Washington Institute.

it also emphasized the need to expand the international education program and military training, by training a larger number of Algerian army officers, and encourage US companies to invest more in Algeria, in line with Algeria’s desire to diversify its economy and encourage investment in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors.

It explains the political and diplomatic doctrine of Algeria, saying that it is characterized by hard-line national tendency, and tend to be non-aligned, and maintaining relationships with the former eastern states, in reference to Russia, and the opposition to foreign intervention by considering it with suspicion, and wondering about the expansion of Western motives in the region.

As for Morocco, the study recommended encouraging what the Moroccan king is doing in the continent (shuttling before and after joining the African Union) in an attempt to rectify what the ezkhzen lost from the imposition of the three decades of isolation, the establishment of US-Morocco Enterprise Fund, and encouraging the Political reform agenda in Morocco, and the expansion of English language education initiatives, as stated in the study.

In this context, the study talked about the existence of strong interest of the United States in stabilizing the eastern neighbor, Algeria, and the success of its democracy, and this can be achieved only by continuing to direct security assistance towards the control of the border, and the training of civilian police and counter-terrorism, noting that the announcement of Tunisia’s acceptance of an Atlantic military base, blew Algerian fears months ago.

The study concluded that the aim of adopting these tips is the desire of the United States in dealing with powerful nations (in North Africa) which govern peoples with democratic methods, to be prepared to work in partnership with Washington to achieve common goals, and promote stability in both Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco, and this will contribute to the containment of the Libyan conflict, and to protect these countries from the risk of terrorist groups that congregate in central Africa, and to ensure the continued regulated flow of migrants to Europe.
