What happened in Tokyo is an indication of the next step towards any provocation
The show-off incident that Moroccan diplomacy experienced at the ministerial meeting of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) has become a trend on social media, and many political activists from both countries read what happened as a miniature image of the next step in the conflict between Algeria and the Moroccan regime.
The video that depicts scenes of the Moroccan diplomat assaulting the representative of the Sahrawi Republic, then the intervention of an Algerian diplomat to throw his Moroccan counterpart to the ground, has received millions of views on the “Tik Tok” and “X” platforms, and these platforms were crowded with sarcastic and serious comments accompanying this unprecedented event, which has invaded the world.
While politicians and activists close to the Moroccan regime remained silent, in an attempt to cover up the slip of the Alawite regime’s representative into violence at an international conference in the far east of the world, as well as to cover up the fact that a member of their delegation was insulted and dragged by his Algerian counterpart who tried to ward off injustice from the representative of an oppressed people, independent activists on social media exploited the incident, which they attributed to the recklessness of the Alawite regime in Rabat and its actions that placed it in the category of rogue regimes that do not care about traditions, customs, or international laws. Unusually, the Moroccan press ignored the video, and none of them dared to publish it, as they usually do, stopping at the “trivialities” of matters and exaggerating them.
However, the scandal in which the Moroccan diplomat was involved, who was deported and dragged by the Algerian, confused them and made them feel inferior.
How was this unprecedented incident read, which ended, as is known, with the confirmation of the Sahrawis’ right to participate in summits in which the African Union is a party, and what are its repercussions on Algerian-Moroccan relations that are worsening by the day?
One of the Moroccan activists on social media networks who is known for following the Algerian-Moroccan tension, Badreddine Al-Aidoudi, considered what the Algerian diplomat did in Tokyo, a miniature image and a form of the Algerian response to any future Moroccan provocation regarding the conflict between the Moroccan regime and the Sahrawi Arab Republic.
Al-Aidoudi said in a video on his YouTube channel, commenting on what happened: “The Moroccan delegation committed a foolish act of bullying. But what happened after that? The Moroccan delegation was expelled.” The political activist noted: “Bullying has become a title for Moroccan diplomacy everywhere. Omar Hilal (the Moroccan regime’s representative at the United Nations) practices bullying, and the Moroccan Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita’s bullying practices. And bullying is the weak’s method of practicing diplomacy.”
According to the Moroccan activist, what the Algerian diplomat did in Tokyo is considered “an art in dealing with Moroccan bullying within the African Union, and it is a method of diplomatic dealing in another way with a rogue regime.
If the Alawite regime believes that it is stronger than the Polisario, then there is someone stronger than it, and the response came at the right time, and this is Algeria’s message. The Makhzen has been insulted.” A Moroccan satirical activist on social media, Ryan One, also followed what happened in Tokyo, and considered it a resounding diplomatic defeat for the Moroccan regime that has shocked the world with the illusory successes of Moroccan diplomacy. He addressed the Alawite regime, saying: “What are you going to do after the insult you were subjected to in Tokyo? Nothing. The Moroccan Makhzen is nothing but…”
