11.000 dilapidated buildings to be restored in Algiers by June 2009

Algiers housing authority is planning to restore 11.000 dilapidated buildings in the capital city before June 2009. The administartion is to annonce bids for specialized companies to achieve the project, says the province director of housing.  

  • The project will start with restoring some 78 000 buildings in the old districts of the city including Mohamed Belouizded, Sidi M’hamad, El Harrache, Central Algiers, Hussein Dey and Beb Eloued.
  • This operation is based on technical studies conducted by the housing authority that revealed dilapidation of a lagre numebr of buildings in the capital city. Their situation requires urgent measures to prevent collapse.
  • Some 17.000 buildings have been visited by technical crews who elaborated comprehensive reports about the housing situation in Algiers.
  • This is the second operation of the kind after the restoration of about 100.000 buildings in Algiers, after the earthquake of May 2003.
