1304 gendarmerie groups cover over 83% of Algeria’s regions
Currently there are 1304 groups, belonging to the national gendarmerie, which cover 1543 municipalities or 83% of the total Algerian municipalities, Colonel Zeghida Djamel Abdeslem, and head of the judicial police say.

“The national gendarmerie is focusing on the Kabylian region after the citizens’ claim of insecurity. For this reason we ordered intervention groups to control the region, and they dismantled a network specialized in drug trade on the public road.

Colonel Zghida presented Tuesday the outcome of the judicial police and gendarmerie activity during 2008, “Judicial police and gendarmerie treated over 40121 crime cases and arrested more than 57.000 people. About 23.000 people were jailed with the total of 110 cases per day. Organized crimes constitute 30% of the total cases.

Security authorities identified the localities which are mostly subjected to criminality. Top criminality locality is Algiers, because of the large number of population, followed by Tlemcen, west of Algeria, Setif -east, Oran west, Tebessa –east, and Tiaret, west of Algeria.

Statistics reveal that 2% of people involved in criminality are children between 13 and 16 year-old, 3% between 16 and 18 year-old, while 38% are married people.

Gendarmerie dealt with 36 cases of illegal immigration, and arrested 320 people who tried to immigrate illegally.

Quantities of drugs which were seized in 2008 reach 30 tons, noticing a rise of 530%, as well as 76246 opium plants.
