19,600 cars stolen in Algeria during eight years

Cars theft phenomenon had known a big rise during the past decade, where the number reached 19,600 cars during the recent eight years, I.e between 2000 and 2008, with the rate of 2600 cars in one day.

• Algiers came at the forefront of the provinces most subjected to cars theft, followed by Tizi Ouzou province (east of Algiers), then Oran (west of Algeria), Blida (Center of Algeria), and finally Setif ( east of Algeria).
• According to the same figures, during the first six months of this year, more than 700 cars were stolen, where 198 people were involved, belonging to the networks of cars’ theft and smuggling.
• Gangs of cars theft resorted to the use of false checkpoints to intercept girls who drive cars, where they took their cars, or they stole them from some chaotic parkings in cities. The involved persons’ ages are between 19 to 40 years old.
• The theft gangs resorted to Sophisticated techniques, where they forged the serial numbers of cars, which are re-sold in some weekly markets or sell them as spare parts, and they use advenced technologies including computers.
• Often involved in these networks are staff of the local administration, especially in municipalities, and their total number reached about 486 workers out of 6,123 persons, who were involved in stealing cars since 2000 until today.
