38 Tons of drug seized in Algeria in 2008

Estimates released by security services reveal that the overall quantity of seized drug over the year 2008 amounted to more than 83 tons of cannabis crowned by the arrest of some 11thousand individuals including 3488 smugglers and 69 farmers involved in the plantation of Cannabis and Opium.

• Among the arrested people, 121 foreigners were involved in this network including 23 from Niger, 15 Malians, 12 Nigerians, 11 Moroccans 5 French a Tunisians and others whose nationalities were not revealed yet.
• According to the head of National Office for Fight against Drug and Addiction, Abdelmalek Sayeh his services are chasing 305 people involved in this trafficking.
• He also hailed the role of the Algerian authorities in following a preventive and coercive policy to combat this phenomenon in a bid to protect the Algerian young people as part of a strategy scheduled as from 2009 till 2013.
