Millions of Algerians will be deprived of access to third-generation 3G services and to this new technology by the current chipset numbers “SIM”, as the use of the new service requires a “USIM” with a brand-new phone number different from the current number possessed by the Subscriber.

According to informed sources, the relevant regulation authority is pondering about the meaning and purpose of preventing mobile phone operators from providing 3 G services to subscribers in the same phone numbers.

This implies the impossibility for millions of Algerian subscribers to obtain a “USIM” third generation of the same phone number that they have been using for so many years.

To access the services of the third generation notably Internet high flow and download files and video calls with the help of the “USIM” , the subscribers would be required to secure new phone numbers as well through the presentation of a certified copy of their identity card to the sales agencies of the mobile phone operator.

A specialist in communications, Farid Farah told Echorouk that this new-fangled procedure has its justifications, especially in terms of security norms whereby the process of monitoring the identities of the users of third-generation chipset will be ensured, but the procedure wouldn’thowever serve the dealers in matters of proper marketing as subscribers should possess the whole multi-media terminals so as to be able to access to the service, he explained.
