40,000 policemen and helicopters to secure Algeria beaches

More than 40,000 mobilised policemen have been deployed in 13 coasty provinces to secure beaches in Algeria especially in areas where some terrorist groups are still working.

  • A security official told Echorouk that policemen in different beaches were provided with bombs detectors, electric guns and two helicopters to ensure air coverage and guide interventions.
  • For his part, president of administration police at public security department Saadi Madjid said summer 2008 Blue Plan came into force on June 21and 48 police centres were opened to secure 57 beaches in 13 coasty provinces.
  • “These centres are in charge of receiving people’s complaints and rapid intervention,” he told Echorouk.
  • He added that the number of agents in the centres depends on the number of holiday makers.
  • Policemen working in beaches were also provided this year with motorcycles to ensure safety and keep watch on any suspicious terrorist act likely to be carried out by the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC).
  • “Agents have been ordered to be vigilant and severe to foil any criminal attacks,” said Saadi.
  • This plan has been provided with other measures to facilitate traffic especially in the afternoon by mobilising motor scooters and coordinating with the National Gendarmerie forces. Over 400 policemen have been mobilised to secure hotels, amusement places.
