60 kilos of drugs seized west of Algeria
Algerian gendarmes seized about 60 kg of drugs in Ain Timouchent, west of Algeria, Algerian gendarmerie commander reported Saturday.

The regional gendarmerie of Bouzdjare, also seized about 55 kg of drugs January 8 in a forest near Sebiate beach, municipality of El M’saed.

Gendarmes, belonging to the traffic security group of Ain Timouchent arrested two people. They were smuggling one kilo of drugs on board of a taxi, and moving from Tlemcen towards Oran, west of Algeria.

The National Office to foght drugs and addiction ONLDT said, 17 tons of Cannabis was seized between January and September in Algeria, and 16 tons were seized during the same period in 2007.

“22 kilos of cocaine also have been intercepted in 2007 and 7, 7 kg in 2006, showing that Algeria is becoming one of drugs transit countries,” said executive at the ONLDT, Salah Abdenouri.

“Algeria is also exposed to “synthetic drugs” from sub-Saharan countries seeking to finance their crossing the Mediterranean to Europe,” he added.
