7 tonnes of drugs seized, 2 drug barons rounded up in western Algeria.

The services of the National Gendarmerie in the province of Tlemcen, in western Algeria, have seized 7 tonnes of drugs since the beginning of the year 2008.

• Last year, during the same period only 3 tonnes of the prohibited drugs were seized by the National Gendarmerie.

• Cocaine smuggled by drug dealers from the Moroccan border into Algerian territory is also a high concern for the Algerian security services.

• In this connection, 273.5 grammes of cocaine were seized by Gendarmerie squads over the past few months and 2 wanted drug barons were arrested and taken into custody following in-depth investigations on the ground.
