700 foreigners detained in Algerian prisons

The head of the Algeria prisons, Mokhtar Felioun declared that 769 in 2320 detainees passed the mid school exams adding that the prisoners who passed the baccalaureate will benefit from several advantages which vary from liberation to the reducing of their penalty depending on the case.

  • According to him this incentives played a major role in raising the prisoners’ awareness and encouraged them to focus on studies.  This policy enabled the release on parole of some 7,545 prisoners since 2003.
  • M. Felioun added that these measures permitted to several prisoners to pursue their studies in the morning and come back to their cells at the end of the day as part of part time freedom, while others benefited from a freedom on parole to carry on their university studies.
  • He also revealed the existence of some 700 foreign prisoners most of the Africans involved in drug trafficking, money laundry and illegal immigration. As to the prisoners’ life detention, M Benhamou revealed a project for the construction of 81 new prisons in the highlands and the south.
