800 sexual assaults against children per year in Algeria

A total of 800 children are victim of sexual violence per year in Algeria, according to figures from forensic medicine department.

  • The figures do not reflect reality because most of children’s parents are not reporting sexual assaults for fear of scandal, said doctors in a seminar held at the Medicine College in Annaba (east of Algeria) on Thursday.
  • Participants in the seminar presented a comparison of the phenomenon between Algeria and Tunisia. Some 166 cases were recorded in the town of Menssir in Tunisia in the last four years while Setif (east of Algeria) knew 16,766 sexual assaults of children in the last three years.
