868 illegal immigrants arrested south of Algeria

Algerian National Gendarmerie saved 80 illegal immigrants’ lives at about 90 km southeast of Djanet, Deep South of Algeria.

  • The regional he gendarmerie chief Hamdi Madani said the arrested people are of various African nationalities. There are men, women, and even children. They could have died of thirst in the Sahara if they were not rescued by the Gendarmerie.
  • After medical care they will appear before a court for illegal immigration and then transferred to Tamnarsset in the illegal immigration center before extradition.  
  • The arrested people were trying to enter the City of Djanet after being abandoned by Algerian smugglers between Djanet and Tamenrasset.
  • The Algerian Gendarmerie Commander said; “868 illegal immigrants have been arrested last three months, including 415 arrested in October, 181 from Niger, 92 from Ghana and 40 from Nigeria, and the rest from various African countries such as Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Chad, Gabon, Senegal and Mauritania.
