The Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ramtane Lamamra has reaffirmed to United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, on Sunday in Algiers, the imperious need for a peaceful political solution in the Libya crisis while reiterating Algeria’s firm rejection of foreign military intervention in any world country.

Speaking at a press conference held jointly with the UN Chief, Mr Lamamra said we have discussed at length the situation in Libya and we have reiterated Algeria’s constant backing for the UN missions and UN special envoys. We have underlined the need for a peaceful political solution in this neighbouring Maghrebian country.

Mr Lamamra noted that the political solution is the only solution that would enable Libya to recover its sovereignty and to foster national unity and stability there.

“We have turned down foreign military intervention, as a position of principle (of Algeria), because this sort of intervention would spawn unnecessary chaos and turmoil”, he underscored.

He added that the two sides highlighted the common achievements made in Mali and the required steps to bolster these assets and to make further progress through the fight against terrorism and the promotion of development projects with a view to offering alternatives for the hopeful youth of the northern regions of Mali.

Mr Lamamra also indicated that other outstanding issues have been discussed with the visiting UN Chief,  with on focus counter-terrorism and the Palestinian issue.

He also hailed the UN’s positive role in helping the Palestinians recover their inalienable rights through the setting up of a sovereign independent State.

Mr Ramtane Lamamra further stated that Algeria, the United Nations and France had contributed to the full success of recently-held Paris Climate Conference “COP21”, stressing that the formal signing of the relevant agreement, in New York in April, will crown the long-running international cooperation process geared to environmental protection.
