Algerian diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi unlikely to act as trouble-shooter in Syria crisis

A close collaborator of Lakhdar Brahimi has revealed to Echorouk that the senior Algerian diplomat is very unlikely to accept to act as new trouble-shooter in the vexed Syria crisis in the aftermath of the resignation of UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan owing to the intricacy of the burning issue.

• The same source added that such a dire trouble-shooting mission had been proposed to Lakhdar Brahimi well before being devolved upon former UN chief Kofi Annan but the Algerian diplomat rebuffed the offer at the time for obvious reasons.

• Owing to his vast experience in conflict-settlement in various parts of the world, 78 year-lod Lakhdar Brahimi surmised that the Syria turmoil is an uphill task, very hard to settle for the time being, on account of the bitter hostility among the various protagonists stemming mostly from the logjam stand adopted by the repressive and unyielding Al Assad regime in the 7-month-old conflict.

• UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon earlier summed up the vexed character of the Syria unrest stressing that there would be no winner in the conflict unless a serious and all-inclusive dialogue was established among the various parties at issue in order to ward off further mayhem targeting mostly the defenseless civilian population.

• He also urged all world powers to tone down their differences and speak with just one voice on the disquieting Syria file with a view to bringing the various warring parties to the negotiating table as part of a bona-fide and mutually-acceptable settlement plan.
