Changing the political system in Algeria a “must,” says Zahra Drif

Deputy Head of the Council of the Nation, Zohra Drif, has called on Sunday “to change the political system” in Algeria, when she was invited for discussions with the The National Commission for Consultations on Political Reforms.

One of the emblematic veterans of the Algerian revolution against the French occupation (1954-1962), Zahra Drif said it is more possible to govern Algeria and Algerians like the ways it was 10, 20 or 50 years ago.”

“The political system must change,” Drif has been quoted as saying by APS. “Comprehensive and radical reforms of the political system are necessary, and should be dictated only by interests of Algeria and its sovereign people,” said the retired lawyer.

Ms Drif 77 further suggested the dissolution of the incumbent parliament and the appointment of a transitional government in charge of preparing and organizing elections of a constituent council before the next 1 November, and then anticipated parliamentary elections in accordance with the new Constitution, before the end of January 2012.”

She further required that President of the Republic to govern this transitional period in accordance to an “ordinance.” Deputy Head of the Senate suggested also naming a committee of experts to draw up new laws on elections, on political parties, an on the participation of woman in elected councils.

Ms Drif believes that the National Army “is in charge of safeguarding the integrity and the inviolability of the territory,” but “should also respect the inviolability of this democratic republican bloc.”
