A milk crisis to hit Algiers and its suburbs

A milk crisis to hit Algiers and its suburbs

Workers of milk production and its derivatives company in Bir Khadem (Algiers), launched a strike on Tuesday morning, as they stopped working since ten am, and paralyzed the overall activity of the compound, and stopped the equipment and machinery, protesting against the administration’s refusal to raise the wages of workers and improve their professional and social situation, and its evasion to achieve their demands, which they lifted in many times.

Workers continue to strike and paralyze the company permanently if the administration will not respond to their demands, first and foremost to increase their wages, which is urgent – as they say – in the absence of reaching an agreement that will end the dispute, especially since officials of the company did not bother to engage with workers and listen to their concerns, and the situation remains portending a crisis of supplying milk bags in the capital and its suburbs, therefore  restoring scenes of long queues in front of shops for selling milk and dairy products, a crisis that hit Algiers in July of last year, which coincided with the month of Ramadan, which the Director-General of the company of milk production said it is due to a problem of refrigeration and storage of raw materials for the production of milk by some speculators, in addition to high temperatures and heavy demand for milk during the month of Ramadan.
At that time, residents of municipalities of Tassala Mardja, Rouiba, Reghaia, Bir Touta, Khraisia, Kalitous and Sidi Moussa, faced significant difficulties in the acquisition of milk, and were obliged to wake up early in the morining (even before the dawn prayer) to get bags’ milk from stores or move to other municipalities where milk is available, as verbal skirmishes among citizens to get a bag of milk was always one of the ugly scenes.
