“Algerians are still faithful to their liberation principles,†says Jacques Vergès
The lawyer of the Algerian liberation revolution Jacques Vergès told Echorouk in an interview the Algerian people are still faithful to their liberation principles.

What does your presence at Algeria’s conference on people’s right in self-determination?
Jacques Vergès: Fisrt, that means my Algerian friends are still faithful to freedom and liberation principles. This conference is important and it affected me a lot.
What do you expect this conference give to colonized people?
Jacques Vergès: I expect that it would draw means which should be adopted in the future to face challenges. There are many countries looking forward independence. Yet, colonization powers threaten them. We saw what the US did in Iraq and what it is doing against the Afghani people.
We also saw crimes perpetrated by the Israeli army in the war on Gaza. They also threatened Syria and Lebanon’s independence. Because of that, I expect that the conference would draw solutions to face the colonization and imperial danger.
There are people’s fair cases like the Western Sahara issue. It found its way to the solution. On the other hand, there are other issues like the Palestinian cause which did not reach any solution? How do you explain that?
Jacques Vergès: First of all, Palestinians should be united before talking about independence. They also should get rid of Israeli agents among them.
What about the Western Sahara issue?
Jacques Vergès: I don not say anything. Morocco seeks to undermine the Sahrawi people.
But it remains an issue without solution, doesn’t it?
Jacques Vergès: Maybe it is due to the weakness of the liberation trend which was represented by men like Djamel Abdenacer follwed by Algerian President Houari Boumediene.
