“Wassila†association: “75% of Algerian women were subject to violence in 2010â€
The volume of Algerian women who were subject to violence reaches 75% in 2010. They were mostly beaten at home within their families, by their husbands or any one of their relatives; because doctors said in more than one case that those who died had more than one certificate which proves that they were beaten before dying.

Head of the “Wassila” association, Dr. Nasser interested in women’s affairs told Echorouk that those who called the association ask for various help, judicial, medical, psychological and even material aid, and they suffer different diseases which lead them to death such as gastric ulcers, diabetes and high blood pressure, due to violence and stress and hesitation to make complaints on aggressors, because of society which considers that making complaints against relatives is a shame.
“The category of young women aged between 20 to 40 years, among the most subjected to this phenomenon, both single and married. They told us that they were beaten by men due to jealousy and love”.
Dr. Nasser said men do not suffer of this phenomenon; “Men do not suffer of this phenomenon. We only start talking about it since a short time despite their suffering is eternal. How can we say that men suffer if they are the cause of this violence?”
The spokeswoman said it is important to create an obligation for making complains by the doctors, as long as the victim in all cases cannot do this due to fear, and thus criminalization of violence will happen in the presence of informants and evidence of the crime.
Dr. Nasser asserted that this phenomenon also affects the rest of the family because they also live violent moments, whether they are brothers or sons; “Dozens of children who suffer nervous illness ask for our help because they saw violence on their mothers”.
