Algeria brilliantly secured a berth in the finals of the 2010 World Cup tournament after beating Egypt by one goal to nil in a bruising play-off match on Wednesday night in El Merreikh stadium of the Sudanese capital Khartoum.

The breakthrough for the valiant Algeria football squad came in the 40th minute of the thrilling game, when seasoned central defender Antar Yahia’s powerful volley clipped the bar and ducked in from a long and accurate cross from midfielder Karim Ziani.

The lackluster Egyptian players sought an equalizer but hopefully to no avail as all their attempts were firmly stymied by a magnificent Algerian defense with rookie goalkeeper Fawzi Chaouchi being at his best throughout the tiebreaker Khartoum match.

The Algerians will thus become the sixth African team at the 2010 World Cup finals, joining fellow qualifiers Ghana, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Nigeria and hosts South Africa.
