Algeria: 140 thousand teachers beset by serious diseases due to undue pupils' leverage
According to latest figures released by the national commission in charge of social affairs, about 140 thousand Algerian teachers have been facing serious illnesses on account of the enormous daily pressure applied on them by school pupils in various provinces of the country.
-
8.200 ailing teachers were helped in seeking surgical operations with the social affairs commission paying for 50% of the costs incurred by such medical treatment.
- The sick teachers who were unable to face up to this debilitating pupils’ pressure in their schools, are beset by serious ailments including heart disease, cancer, and psychological breakdown.
- These hapless teachers, says the relevant commission, are also confronted with nerve-racking administrative constraints at the level of their respective schools as they are not allowed to quit their place of work for a long rest in order to follow their medical treatment.
- Many of them were prevented by the relevant administration from benefiting from a long rest-period and from an entire taking in charge of the medical treatment of their disease.
- A Trade Union representative of the education sector, Messaoud Amraoui, told Echorouk that these ailing teachers were in the face of mounting difficulties, stressing that the education and health ministries should pool their efforts with the aim of helping all the sick teachers across the national territory benefit from a full medical treatment at ease with the relevant authorities undertaking to reimburse all the medical expenses as part of the social security contributions.
