Algeria: 14,000 locally elected men refuse property declaration

A total of 10 percent of 14,000 municipal and provincial representatives did not declare their properties despite nearly one year has passed since local elections, Echorouk learnt from informed sources.

Figures from Algerian Interior Ministry reveal that the volume of funds looted by former elected people exceeded 348 billion centimes. Illegal deals are behind the looted money.

A total of 1,648 local elected representatives were prosecuted during the previous electorates 2002-2007. Of them, 900 were convicted.

The estimated number of local elected representatives is approximately 14,000. Of them, 80 percent in municipal councils and 20 percent in provincial ones, in addition to 1,500 elected out of 15,000 who declared their properties.
