Algeria : 16 billion dinars to be “burnt” by Algerians on the eve of Prophet's birthday celebration

Like every year, Algerians from all walks of life are expecting the so-called ” firecrackers war”on the eve of the celebration of Mawlid Ennabaoui Echarif or Prophet Mohamed's birthday, God's peace and blessings be upon him.The widespread use of firecrackers and bangers on the eve of each celebration of the Prophet’s birthday in Algeria has become a usual practice despite the high cost of these banned pyrotechnic products.

Some Algerian families don’t hesitate to spend up to 20.000 dinars for the purchase of these explosive products to please their children despite their dangerous nature.

Figures show that up to 16 billion dinars are spent every year by about 4 million Algerian families for the purchase of these nefarious products which are the source of hundreds of accidents including severe burns and wounds.

Knowledgeable sources say that the 16 billion dinars, spent annually by Algerians for the purchase of these pyrotechnic products, could well be used, for instance, for the building of about 200 new housing units or for the promotion of fresh investment projects for the benefit of the youth in addition to the financing of other useful development projects.

What is most disquieting in all this, is the mindless use of these dangerous firecrackers and bangers by youngsters and even by adults who usually adopt a couldn’t care less attitude on these occasions by throwing them everywhere, even on their neighbours or on passers by.
