Algeria counts 119 private schools including 78 in Algiers and 9 in Tizi Ouzou (100 km east of Algiers).
-
Algerian Eduction Ministry has determined procedures and conditions for the private schools including the necessity of teaching in Arabic and making programmes in conformity with the Algerian education system.

For his part, Algerian Education Minister Abu Bekr Ben Bouzid denied the closure of 14 private schools. “One school was closed but it was re-opened for this season.”
-
-
“These schools deserve the ministry’s support even for books as they are teaching our children,” he added.
-
In 2007, the Esucation Ministry prevented private schools from working in Algeria as they were not using Arabic and respecting official programmes taught in Algerian public schools.
-
Those schools were given a deadline to settle their situation while many parents expressed anger over the closure decision.
