Algeria: 199 private schools open doors under ministry’s conditions
Abu Bek Ben Bouzid, Algerian Education Minister

Algeria counts 119 private schools including 78 in Algiers and 9 in Tizi Ouzou (100 km east of Algiers).

  • Algerian Eduction Ministry has determined procedures and conditions for the private schools including the necessity of teaching in Arabic and making programmes in conformity with the Algerian education system.
  •
  • For his part, Algerian Education Minister Abu Bekr Ben Bouzid denied the closure of 14 private schools. “One school was closed but it was re-opened for this season.”
  •
  • “These schools deserve the ministry’s support even for books as they are teaching our children,” he added.
  • In 2007, the Esucation Ministry prevented private schools from working in Algeria as they were not using Arabic and respecting official programmes taught in Algerian public schools.
  • Those schools were given a deadline to settle their situation while many parents expressed anger over the closure decision.
