Algeria: 500 victims of medical malpractice vow to stand up for their rights
Under the patronage of the Algerian League for the defense of human rights, a new association bringing together the victims of medical malpractice in Algeria was set up in Algiers with the aim of alerting the relevant authorities to the plight of these victims and ensuring their legitimate right to compensation.
-
The chairman of the Algerian league for the defense of human rights said during the inaugural meeting that such an association was geared to making the voice of the hapless victims of medical malpractice heard in Algeria and elsewhere in the world.
-
The meeting, dedicated to the launching of this association, was attended by numerous victims of medical malpractice, their relatives as well as a host of committed doctors and lawyers.
-
Figures show that up to 500 Algerian patients were the victims of gross medical malpractice during surgery in several Algerian hospitals and other health facilities by careless doctors or surgeons.
-
Many victims lost their eyesight or sustained serious disabilities on account of this criminal negligence, as one lawyer put it.
-
Such blameworthy doctors should answer for their acts before justice because they flouted the medical code of ethics, he pointed out.
-
He further indicated that many benevolent and well-meaning lawyers were ready to defend these victims’ rights in court free of charge as a token of solidarity and solicitude.
