Algeria:  70 % of married women use the contraceptive pill to avert pregnancy

According to the head of the maternity ward at Mustapha Bacha university hospital in central Algiers Professor Bouzid Addad, the random and misplaced use of the contraceptive pill by certain ill – advised women could have nefarious repercussions on their health. 

 

 

  • In a statement to the newspaper Echorouk, Professor Bouzid Addad indicated that about 70 % of married women had recourse to the contraceptive pill to ward off pregnancy.
  • The use by non – married women of the contraceptive pill is increasing in Algeria by leaps and bounds, he said without giving precise figures on the matter owing to the secrecy surrounding the use of the pill in such circumstances.
  • Professor Addad further warned that the disorderly use of the contraceptive pill outside medical control could endanger women’s health.
  • He indicated that the use of the contraceptive pill without medical guidance by these reckless women could cause them infertility, sterility and even cancer among other serious ailments.
