Algeria: “8 tonnes of decayed frozen meat and fish seized by National Gendarmerie”

The National Gendarmerie forces have broken up a covert trading ring involved in the import and unbridled commercialization of outdated frozen meat and fish in several districts of the capital Algiers as well as in Blida and Médéa.

  • At the outcome of a minute and exhaustive investigation carried out on the basis of precise information, the Gendarmerie forces launched a large swoop on several butcher’s shops in the districts of Meissonier, Hussein Dey, Draria and Sidi M’hamed and seized about 8 tonnes of decayed frozen meat and fish kept in refrigerated rooms and ready to be commercialized.
  •
  •
  • This large quantity of frozen meat and fish imported from Denmark expired in the years 2009 and 2010 but was all the same kept secretly refrigerated in order to be commercialized despite the dangerous risks entailed to the health of the Algerian consumers.
  •
  •
  • A sizable part of this outdated frozen meat and fish was also to be sold in the cities of Blida and Médéa.
  •
  •
  • Two people involved in the import of this decayed load of meat and fish as well as several venal traders were rounded up by Gendarmerie elements, subjected to a thorough questioning and then remanded in custody.
