About 960 custom officers from various ranks and responsibilities were present before the National Disciplinary Committee of the Algerian customs’ General Department in the last three years on charges of corruption, law violations and professional errors of 4th or 3rd degree.

Principal inspectors have been punished because of irregularities in conducting customs’ department.

A Customs official told Echorouk that 960 gendarmes appeared in court in last 3 years and the committee dealt with 425 disciplinary case files in 2006. A total of 25 custom officers were dismissed, 18 cases of those who abandoned their positions and seven elements were fired.

The same official said the customs department transferred the case files of 320 custom officers in 2007 to the disciplinary committee including 26 cases of dismissal.
