Algeria allocates 18 billion dinars to fight clandestine migration

Algeria multipied its counter-illegal migration budget five times in 2008 to reach 18 billion dinars. That was allocated by the Ministry of Interior in addition to spending a significant sum of money to transport illegal migrants to their countries.

  • A source from the ministry of interior said the ministry contracted with private companies to transfer clandestine immigrants to their coutries’ borders following court orders so that Algerian authorities ensure their safety until they reach their borders.
  • According to Echorouk’s sources, the money allocated for this process quintupled compared to previous years. The sum which was estimated at six billions or less during the past years, it rose in opposition to the phenomenon aggravation, especially last year. It reached the number of 12,000 clandestine migrants in 2007 forefronted by the Malians with more than 7,000 immigrants followed by Nigerians with about 3,000 immigrants then other Africans, in addition to a large number of other nationalities, especially Asians and Moroccans.
