Algeria call for an international assistance for the Sahel countries in their fight against terrorism

Talking of the occasion of the United Nations’ meeting that took place on Thursday, the Algerian representative has forwarded a project in the framework of cooperation within the Mediterranean region, in which he called all the African countries notably the Sahel region to strengthen their cooperation to fight against terrorism including the use of weapons of mass destruction by the terrorists.

  • All the African representatives that took part to the UN committee for talks over disarmament and regional security have agreed upon the necessity to coordinate their efforts and follow a common strategy in their fight against terrorism and arms smuggling.

  • The Algerian representative Djamel Meketfi has considered in his project entitled “Fostering security and cooperation in the Mediterranean region”, that nuclear weapons disarmament and security in Africa are key factors to reach stability and security in the Mediterranean region hinting to the utmost importance of the implementation of “Belindabba” agreement of July 2009.

  • As to the fight against terrorism in the Sahel region, M Meketfi has indicated that Algeria was the first to call for this cooperation but the alarming situation that is now prevailing in the Sahel region requires assistance from the international community to help those countries facing this phenomenon.

  • The Algerian official has hinted to the necessity to find ways to upgrade the “weak” countries’ military strategies in the fight against terrorism to avoid disparities between the countries especially that the terrorists can even use weapons of mass destruction.
