The Algerian foreign ministry Friday called in chargé d’affaires at the Moroccan embassy in Algiers to ask him for explanations about the man who tore the national flag at the Algerian consulate in Casablanca.

Algeria condemned the protests which took place at the consulate as protesters shouted hostile slogans.

The ministry considered that as a “serious unprecedented act” as the man was not prevented by the Moroccan police.
Spokesman for the ministry Amar Blani raised questions over the non protection of the Algerian consulate’s employees by Moroccan security forces.
In a written statement, Blani said the Algerian flag was torn on a holy day for Algerians, warning Moroccan politicians and journalists for raising hate amid Morocco’s people against Algeria.
The ministry also said there is no country which admits Morocco’s sovereignty on Western Sahara’s territories. “Algeria is a neighboring country to Morocco and not a part in the conflict over the Western Sahara issue.”
