Algeria / Car dealers bring controversial tax issue on new vehicles to parliament

In a bid to secure a long sought-after rescinding of the controversial decision by the Algerian government to impose new taxes on the purchase of new vehicles, the national car dealers’ Agency has referred this burning issue to the appreciation of parliament for a final breakthrough. 

• The car dealers have repeatedly branded the government’s decision as discriminatory and unpopular.
• The decision was also severely castigated by potential car buyers in Algeria.

• They argued that the imposition of additional taxes on the purchase of new vehicles was detrimental to the citizens’ already eroded purchasing power.

• The car dealers also complained that such an untoward move would put at risk thousands of jobs in the automobile market in Algeria.
