Algeria car sales go down by 40-60 percent

Car sales in Algeria dropped by 40 to 60 percent in June-November 2008, the first ever fall in cars sale activity since 2002, according to figures from the Algeria Automobile Dealers' Association.

• Analysts say the drop of car sales in Algeria has nothing to do with global financial crisis but it is related to a set of local factors including new car taxes.

• Algeria’s statistics office of customs said the country imported about 180,000 cars in January-October 2008.

• Early on Tuesday, U.S. automakers sharpened their pleas for a government lifeline and car companies around the world cut costs and production following the global financial crisis consequences on the industry.

• On the other hand, the car industry’s troubles were in the most prominent position on Tuesday with more news of production cuts and falling vehicle sales in Europe, Asia, Africa and the United States.
