Algeria developed a plan to combat nuclear terrorism
President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika, orders 5 ministerial departments to create joint activities in the field of strengthening nuclear security, keeping attention to the human element and upgrading consciousness about the dangers arising from the use of equipments and dual-use materials, in order to reduce the risks and the suppression of what is called “acts of nuclear terrorism”.
This initiative stems – as confirmed by President Bouteflika – from the “conviction” of Algeria that “it is not possible for any nuclear security system to be reliable and effective, unless it is supplied with qualified human resources to ensure the functioning of this system and its continuity.”
Interior and local communities Ministry, in coordination with the Foreign Affairs Ministry, will frame this program which affects other sectors, including the Directorate General for National Security and Customs, civil protection and transport, Energy and Mines ministries.
In this context, the Director General of National Security, Major General Abdelghani Hamel asserted; “Algeria is a state party to all the mechanisms and tools for International Private strengthening of nuclear security, and combating terrorism in all its forms, including the United Nations Convention on the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism and the Convention on the Physical Protection of nuclear materials, and the Code of conduct for the international Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on the security of radioactive sources. “
