Algeria did not notify Interpol about arrest warrant for Chakib Khelil

The Interpol will not execute the international arrest warrant for Algeria’s former energy minister Chakib Khelil as it is not in conformity with the local law, according to a lawyer at the Algerian Higher Court.

“The Algerian justice will not notify the Interpol about the arrest because it is not in conformity with the local law. The Interpol is an international executive institution which applies international arrest warrants according to criteria based on legitimacy and law,”Abdelkader Bendaoud told Echorouk.
He added that the arrest warrant violates Article 573 of the Algerian penal law. “It is a big judicial mistake made by the examining judge and Public Prosecutor as they did not respect correct procedures.”
Earlier in August, the Algiers Public Prosecutor issued an international arrest warrant for Chakib  Khelil, his wife and his two sons for being involved in corruption scandals and money laundering and concluding illegal deals.
