Algeria: “Echorouk opens the vexed file of ferrous and non ferrous waste”
Reliable sources say that the law is being flouted in the export overseas of ferrous and non ferrous waste despite the clear provisions contained in the 2010 law of finance which prohibits such a practice.
- The sources say that numerous clandestine workshops have been set up in several parts of the country with the aim of transforming ferrous and non ferrous waste into semi-industrial products before their export to foreign countries in total defiance of customs’ law n° 7602 which prohibits such exports.
- These sources told Echorouk that the people concerned were waiting for this vexed issue to be seriously tackled by the relevant authorities in order to prevent Algeria from being drowned into this waste and settling the case of the 40 thousand workers laid off in this lucrative sphere of activity.
- Sources from the National Statistics Center told “Echorouk” that despite the ban on the export of ferrous and non ferrous waste, exports of aluminum have greatly increased since the adoption of the 2009 complementary law of finance.
- According to the same sources, the quantity of exported aluminum has reached 2.780 tonnes between January 2010 and September of the same year for a financial cost estimated at 199 million dinars.
- During the year 2009, the exports of ferrous and non ferrous waste products reached 1.500 tonnes for a total coast of 90 million dinars.
- In 2007, such exports attained 730 tonnes.
- The same sources say that the relevant authorities including the trade and justice ministerial departments should deal with this thorny problem before things go further downhill to the detriment of the national economy.
- They further said that stringent laws and regulations should be enforced without further prevarication with a view to “cleansing” this sector of activity once and for all by stamping out all illegal practices linked to the export of transformed ferrous and non ferrous waste products in order to safeguard the national economy.
