Algeria: Explosions at Naftal fuel depot at Caroubiers not accidental

Preliminary findings in the ongoing investigation carried out by the security services into this week’s double explosion of two petrol and gas-oil tank lorries at the NAFTAL fuel depot in the district of Caroubiers in Central Algiers show that the damaging huge blast was glaringly caused by a human error.

The outcome of the preliminary inquiry points to a gross human blunder involving directly the driver of one of the tank lorries whose blatant recklessness and negligence was behind the double explosion at the Naftal filling fuel depot causing 5 injured among the company’s employees and extensive material damage.

The swift intervention of the civil protection squads who rushed to the scene, helped curtail the nefarious repercussions of the enormous blaze triggered off by the two violent explosions, according to eye-witness accounts.

A Naftal Unit Manager stressed in the aftermath of the tragedy, that the Caroubiers fuel site was at risk on a permanent basis because of the dangerous nature of the elements on the spot surrounding the manifold inflammable hydrocarbon products.
