Algeria geared up for suicide attacks

Algeria’s police force has provided policemen wearing civilian clothes with bomb detectors to foil any potential attack, said security officials.

Policemen wearing civilian clothes have been deployed in markets and public places as Algeria will mark the first anniversary of the December 11 attacks.

The national police (DGSN) said security measures were stepped up in Algiers, Boumerdes and Tizi Ouzou (east of Algiers).

“Security forces take terrorist threats seriously and adapt their plan to them what ever their nature,” says DGSN.

“Bomb detectors will be efficient in the fight against terrorism.”

Last year, Algeria was rocked by two deadly suicide attacks on December 11 which targeted UN offices and the constitutional Council in Algiers.

Earlier on April 11th 2007, terrorist carried out two suicide attacks on the Government Palace and a police station in Algiers killing more than 20 people and wounding 162.
