Algeria likely to choose presidential system in constitutional amendement

Algeria is likely to adopt presidential system in the next constitutional amendment as the ruling party RND and the FLN support it.

“We have the conviction that the presidential system is the right system to Algeria,” said spokesman for the FLN Aissa Kassa.

The party submitted the suggestion of adopting a presidential system to the People’s National Assembly (APN) in summer 2011 and Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal.

Speaking about FLN’s members who are calling for parliamentary system, Kassa told Echorouk they are a minority. “We knew that through debate between the party’s executives.

The FLN called for a presidential system “but with a parliament with extended prerogatives. Relationship between the President of the Republic and Prime Minister should be clear.”

 Earlier in 2011, the party gathered its executives and presented a constitutional law-related document. It was prepared by experts and deals with positive and negatives points of parliamentary and presidential systems.

According to the document, parliamentary system has more positive points than negative ones contrarily to the presidential system. Abdelaziz Belkhadem who was the party’s leader did not decide about the issue.

Politicians are divided between supporters of presidential systems and those of parliamentary system.
