Algeria must organize referendum on Mediterranean Union, says Workers' leader
Louiza Hanoune

Secretary General of the Workers' party, Louiza Hanoune considered the Mediterranean Union a threat to all Mediterranean countries as well as Algeria. She called for organizing a referendum about the adherence of Algeria to the project earlier announced by French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

  • On the opening of the second session of the party’s national council, Hanoune officially called on behalf of her party for “a popular referendum to know Algerian’s opinion about the issue”.
  •
  • Workers’ party leader said that Algeria had nothing to earn from this new project. “Algeria has no interests in the MU,” explaining that Algerians are against this project and noting that “Bosses from the Mediterranean coast are the only who encouraged this project.” “They are running behind a 75 million customers’ market in North Africa and what Europe does is only an introduction to the USA entry into the region.”
  •
  • Louiza Hannoune renewed her party’s total refusal to this project because “it will only be away to normalize relations with Israel.”  ut more than that is “preparing other things which will not help southern region countries of the Mediterranean coast”.
  •
  •  She asked about the significance behind the NATO’s “affection” towards Algeria and said in this context that “Algeria’s concerns and objectives are not as the same as the NATO’s ones.”
  • She confirmed that the issue is “not only national sovereignty but also affecting Algeria’s security which is based on prevention and not aggression.” That sows doubt around the secret of NATO’s attention to Algeria.
