According to sources from the Interior Ministry in Algiers , a new salary chart for the benefit of Mayors and elected members of local Assemblies is to be finalised shortly.
This salary revision comes in the framework a new executive decree adopted recently by the Algerian government for salaried employees of the civil service and the local Assemblies.
This salary hike has become a dire necessity owing to the erosion of the citizens’ purchasing power characterized notably by a skyrocketing rise in staple commodities and services.
In this connection, Echorouk newspaper quoted a local official as saying that the monthly salary of an elected municipal representative averages 27.000 dinars while that of the Mayor himself does not exceed 18.000 dinars.
He stressed to this effect, that the salary hike decision had become a prerequisite in order, he said, to head off any “financial drift” within the country’s communal Assemblies.
