Algeria participates in the Council of Arab Interior Ministers to discuss the ways to fight against terrorism
Algeria, represented by its Interior Minister Noureddine Yazid Zerhouni, participates Tuesday and Wednesday 16-17 March, in the 27th session of the Council of Arab Interior Ministers held in Tunis, as terrorism, organized crime, drug trafficking and money laundering are the main topics to be discussed.

In parallel with the Arab meeting, this includes many of the points on the fight against terrorism, and in preparation for the meeting of the Sahel region Foreign Minister, taking place in Sheraton Hotel Algiers, the Centre of African Studies and Research on Terrorism organized on Sunday, March 15, the regional workshop on giving assistance in the investigation on the financing of terrorism in cooperation with the Embassy of Canada in Algiers, as quoted by the Algerian News Agency on behalf of the Director of the center, Mr. Ilias Boucraa saying that terrorism is nowadays the main danger that threatens humanity, asserting that the international community and the African Union made of this phenomenon a first priority.

The official added; “Al Qaeda re-spread in the Sahel region and the emergence of youth organizations in the African Horn, as well as the spread of organizations supporting Al Qaeda Western and Central Africa necessitate the need for cooperation in order to respond optimally, however, this cooperation should be realized according to the needs expressed by the countries that are most vulnerable to this danger, thus cooperation should not become intervention in their internal affairs”.

For his part, the Ambassador of Canada to Algeria Patrick Parisot said that several North and West African countries are threatened by terrorism many years ago, noting that Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb is the most active terrorist organization in North Africa, therefore it constitutes a real threat to Algeria’s and western interests in the region, affiriming the determination of Canada to work with Algeria and the Sahel region, where terrorism threats security of the citizens, in the fight against this phenomenon.

With regard to the objectives of this conference, Boucraa said that it aims to train investigators specialized in the fight against financing terrorism, asserting that money laundering, kidnapping, extortion, and smuggling are all sources of terrorism financing, and that the exchange of information is the best formula to combat this international phenomenon.
