Algeria police comb 5,000 suspicious areas

Police forces have beefed up inspection and surveillance campaigns since the Algiers December 11 attacks.

• More than 5,000 security campaigns were carried out by the police during the first semester of 2008 within the fight against crime.
• Sensitive places, “suspicious” popular coffee shops, public markets and bus stations were combed as well as shanty towns. As a result, 540 suspects were arrested while 70,265 people were questioned during the first semester of 2008.
