International expert and professor at the University of Algiers Maya Sahli said men dominate positions of prefects and diplomacy while some women ministers were appointed by the president of the republic.
-
“There are only two female ambassadors and there is almost a total absence of women in consulates,” she said in a seminar in Algiers.
-
“The education sector is the only sector where women have been remarkably present since the post-independence,” she added.
-
She concluded that women’s political representation in Algeria is not sufficient in spite of their growing awareness and their capability of bearing responsibilities.
-
“Equality between men and women are not real. It is no more than a legal equality as its concretisation mechanisms are still week.”
-
The expert conducted a survey on 100 women. Of them, eight expressed their desire to be involved in the political sector.

The seminar coordinator Said Mokadem presented the latest figures on women’s political representation. Algeria is ranked 113 in the world and eight in the Arab World after Iraq, Syria, Tunisia, Arab Emirates, Mauritania and Sudan
